Being married to the military has its perks. Insurance, BAH/OHA, COLA, bill allowances, possibility of living overseas or in new places, meeting new people, etc. But there is a dark side to it that most won’t truly understand until they get to their first duty station or they move overseas for the first time. It’s the simple fact that military spouses take a financial hit when it comes to their careers–and that’s not just in the short-term.
In 2014 The Military Officers Association of America and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families found that 90% of the female spouses within the study reported that they were underemployed or overqualified for the positions they were holding (study found here). Not only were spouses found to be under employed, but the study’s results also showed that military spouses make an average of 38% less than civilian counterparts, and unemployment rates are approximately 3 times higher than the national average.
If you’ve been part of this life long enough or have lived in job-scarce locations then you or your friends have been affected by this. The registered Nurse working as a barista, the Accountant volunteering as the PTO Treasurer, the military veteran spouse selling for direct marketing companies, or the Teacher who can only find substitute work. Although I have been fortunate in finding work, I am one of those who is underemployed with respect to education and probably experience too.
There are things that we can do though to bring in income, lessen our worries, and fill in the gaps when it comes to your résumé or CV. Below I’ve highlighted a list of possible online jobs that can typically be done from any location and at your own hours. Of course some positions might have scheduling requirements but that will depend on the company. I will eventually write more posts to link companies with the different types of positions but for now, use this list as an idea generator. Do you have a skill or experience that you could utilize in a new way? Are you looking for something flexible but also portable?
Ask yourself if any of these positions could be a potential fit for your lifestyle.
